Forty-seven inches is the entire bed, floor to the top of the frame, which is only a few inches above kitchen counter height. That number is why this bunk fits rooms that defeat a normal one: attic conversions with sloping ceilings, rooms where a tall bunk would cover the window, and any bedroom where an adult needs to lean over and tuck in the child sleeping on top. The cost is headroom on the lower bunk, which becomes a place for sleeping and reading rather than sitting up straight.

How it lives in the room

Reach the top bunk standing up

At 47 inches an adult changes the upper sheet without a stool and without climbing. That is the practical argument for a low bunk and it is worth more than it sounds: bedding on a standard top bunk is the chore parents quietly stop doing properly after a few months.

A 9.5-inch step is steep

Household stairs rise about seven inches per step. These rise 9.5, so the climb is steeper than anything a child does in the rest of the house. It is still far safer than a ladder because the tread is deep and the hands are free, but expect the first few climbs to be slow and watched.

Every step hides a cubby

Storage sits under each tread, which only works if the treads stay clear. A step used as a shelf for a water bottle becomes the thing somebody stands on in the dark. Load the cubbies, keep the tops bare, and the staircase remains a staircase.

Before you order

The upper mattress must not exceed 6 inches. With 11.8-inch enclosed guardrails there is no margin to spend: a thicker mattress raises a sleeping child toward the top of the rail, which is precisely the situation the enclosed rail exists to prevent.
