Most dining tables are bought for the largest meal of the year and lived with for the other 364 days. This one is the opposite proposition: sized honestly for four, on a cross-shaped pedestal that keeps the floor clear, in a grey wood grain that does not demand anything of the room around it. In a breakfast nook or a one-bedroom flat that is the correct decision, and the space it gives back is real square footage rather than a rounding error.

How it lives in the room

Be honest about the number

If you host eight twice a year, an extendable table is the right buy. If you eat as two and occasionally four, a four-seat table used daily beats a six-seat table with two chairs permanently empty.

Anchor it to the room

Small round tables drift. Centre it under a light or against a window rather than floating it in the middle of an open plan, or it will end up pushed into a corner by degrees.

Add a fifth chair, not a bigger table

A round table takes one more person than it should far more gracefully than a rectangle. Keeping a folding chair in a cupboard is the cheapest capacity upgrade there is.

Before you order

Small tables tip more easily than large ones because the base is proportionally smaller. Worth remembering if a toddler is likely to use the edge to pull themselves up.
