Four main branches is the whole structure, and at six feet that is not many. Everything about how full this looks comes down to how those four get splayed once they are pushed into the holes in the trunk: clustered, the tree is a pole with a tuft on top; fanned into four different directions and bent out at different heights, it fills a corner. The branches are wired for exactly that reason. Budget twenty minutes for it rather than treating assembly as a two-minute job.

How it lives in the room

Splay the four branches unevenly

Push each branch fully into its socket, then bend the first one out low and short, the next two at middle height in opposite directions, and the last one up and over the top. Four branches arranged at four heights reads as a tree. Four branches at the same height reads as a bottle brush, and no amount of leaf fiddling afterwards undoes it.

Orange-red wants a quiet wall

This is a strongly coloured object. Against a warm beige or terracotta wall the leaves lose definition and the whole thing goes muddy; against white, pale grey or a dark green-grey it separates cleanly and the colour does what it is there for. Worth deciding before unpacking, because the obvious autumn instinct is to put it with other warm tones.

Pack it flat for eleven months

Unlike a green tree, a maple in full autumn colour has a season, and most of the year it will be in a cupboard. The branches pull back out of the trunk, which means the tree stores as a bundle of four branches and a pot rather than as a tree. Keep the original carton; nothing else is the right shape.

Before you order

Stated height comes from hand measurement, so an inch either way is normal. Leaves and branches also arrive creased from the carton and need working back by hand before the tree looks like anything at all.
