Forty-six inches, forty-seven, fifty-one: the differences between round tables in this range matter far less than people think when comparing listings, and far more when the table is in the room. The number that actually decides comfort is not the diameter but the clearance around it — 36 inches from table edge to wall or furniture is what a person needs to sit down and get up without a manoeuvre. Get that right and 46 inches seats six; get it wrong and 51 seats four badly. Black wood-grain MDF, cross base with 25 mm legs, storage shelf underneath.

How it lives in the room

Tape the circle

Mark a 46-inch circle on the floor with tape, then mark another circle three feet outside it. If the second circle hits a wall or a sofa, that is where the problem is — not in the table size.

Sit before you buy chairs

Chair depth eats the clearance you just measured. A chair with a 20-inch seat pulled out to sit down occupies about 30 inches from the table edge, which is why 36 is the working figure.

Then worry about inches

Once the clearance works, the difference between a 46 and a 51-inch top is a matter of how much serving space you want in the middle. That is a preference, not a constraint.

Before you order

Black tops photograph beautifully and live slightly harder than mid-tones — dust and crumbs are visible from across the room. Nothing a daily wipe does not fix.
