Bird of paradise is the plant people photograph, and the flowers are why. This four-foot version carries three of them — the pointed orange-and-blue crest on a stiff stem — set among broad, split banana-style leaves made by integrated moulding rather than cut and glued. Assembly is unusually simple for a plant this size: the leaves push into the branches and it is essentially done, with no lengthy bending required. The white planter is filled with solid cement so nothing knocks it over.

How it lives in the room

Push, then twist

Each leaf pushes into a socket on the branch. Seat it fully, then twist it to the angle you want — the sockets grip enough to hold position, so the angle you set is the angle you keep.

Stagger the flowers

Three flowers all at the same height look planted by a machine. Set one high, one mid and one low, facing slightly different ways.

Turn the leaves edgewise

Big paddle leaves all facing forward look like a wall. Turning two or three of them to show their edge instantly gives the plant depth.

Before you order

Broad leaves at four feet catch a passing sleeve easily. Not fragile, but a spot slightly out of the walkway saves resetting the leaf angles every week.
