Small-flat dining is a scheduling problem more than a space problem. A drop-leaf table solves it by having two sizes — 23 inches against a wall for coffee and a laptop, 47 inches out in the room when four people are eating. The lower shelf holds the things that would otherwise live on the top, the frame is metal under an MDF surface, and the four PU chairs tuck fully underneath in either configuration.

How it lives in the room

Live at 23 inches first

Set it up closed against the wall and see how the room works. Most people find they open one leaf permanently and keep the other for guests.

Learn the leaf action

Support the leaf as it drops rather than letting it fall. The hinge is fine; the finish on the underside of an unsupported leaf is what suffers.

Then use the shelf

Cookbooks, napkins, a bottle. A drop-leaf table only stays clear if there is somewhere for the clutter to go, and that is the shelf.

Before you order

Do not sit at a dropped leaf. The table takes weight properly across the fixed centre section only — leaning on a closed leaf is how the hinge gets bent.
