A twin mattress is about 39 inches wide, so before the divider is counted this arrangement is already 78 inches across, wider than a king bed. Add the bookcase between them and the unit wants something close to eight feet of clear wall. That is the measurement to take first, because the layout only makes sense with both headboards against one long wall. In a room where eight feet of uninterrupted wall does not exist, the two beds have to live apart, which the design allows but is not what was bought.

How it lives in the room

Find eight feet of clear wall

Measure between the obstructions, not the corners. A radiator, a window reveal or a door architrave inside that run changes the answer. If the wall is short by half a foot, the divider can sit at one end instead of the middle, but that is a different piece of furniture to the one in the photographs.

Four rolling drawers, four possible homes

The fabric drawers go under either bed or out at the sides on castors, which means they adapt to whichever wall is blocked. Put the heavy ones where the floor is clearest. Rolling drawers on carpet need a firmer pull than on board, and a child will abandon one that fights back.

The middle unit is the shared nightstand

The wide top panel between the beds works as one oversized nightstand for two children, which saves the floor two small tables would take. One lamp on it serves both sides. It also means everything on it is shared, so expect a line down the middle to appear without being drawn.

Before you order

Corner covers and mattress stoppers come fitted, and the stoppers are the part that earns its place daily: two twin mattresses pushed together drift apart as children climb on them, and without the stops that gap opens up overnight.
