The seven-foot width is the number that decides whether a job has a seam in it, and a seam is where synthetic grass stops being convincing: the join catches light differently and grit works into it. Anything up to seven feet across goes down in one piece from this roll, so the question to answer with a tape measure is the narrow dimension of the area, not the long one. Fifteen feet of length then covers most small yards, side returns and balconies.

How it lives in the room

Measure the narrow side first

Width governs everything here. An area six feet nine inches across takes one piece with a trim; an area seven feet two inches across needs two pieces and a join, which is a different job and a different result. If the space is marginally over seven feet, consider losing the difference to a gravel margin or a paved border rather than accepting a seam.

Rinse before the smell arrives

Vertical drainage moves liquid through the backing quickly, which is most of the pet problem solved, but the residue stays in the pile. A hose down every few days through summer handles it; waiting until there is a reason to means scrubbing. Solids have to be picked up, since nothing about drainage holes helps with those.

Concrete is easier than bare soil

The backing works on soil, concrete or an existing hard floor, and the surfaces are not equally easy. Concrete and decking are already flat, so the turf goes down and stays down. Bare soil has to be dug out, levelled and compacted first, and that preparation is several hours of work that decides how the finished sheet looks for the next decade.

Before you order

Four shades include straw-coloured fibre, which looks like dead grass in close-up photographs and is exactly why the sheet does not read as plastic from a distance. Flattened pile recovers with brushing or a few days of sun.
