The 36 mm top is worth understanding, because it is the part that determines how long the table looks new. That thickness gives a substantial edge profile and a rigid surface that will not bow between supports, and the finish is specified as heat-resistant, scratch-proof and water-repellent. Repellent, importantly, rather than waterproof — MDF handles a spill wiped up promptly and does not handle water standing in a joint overnight. Knowing the difference is most of what long-term care amounts to.

How it lives in the room

Protect the edges

The edge banding is where a laminated top is most vulnerable, and it takes the hit from chair backs and vacuum cleaners. A felt pad on the back of each chair rail costs nothing and prevents the one kind of damage that cannot be polished out.

Wipe, do not soak

Water-repellent surfaces shed a spill for minutes, not hours. The habit that matters is dealing with liquid at the edge and the extension seam quickly — the flat centre of the top will look after itself.

Use trivets anyway

Heat-resistant covers a warm plate. It does not cover a cast iron pan straight off the hob, and the mark that leaves is permanent.

Before you order

When the table is extended, the seam where the leaf meets the top is the low point of the surface. Crumbs and liquid find it, so it is worth a specific wipe rather than a general one.
