An upper deck at 35.4 inches sits roughly at kitchen counter height, and that is the number separating this from a standard bunk. An adult can change the top sheets standing beside the bed rather than climbing onto it. A child getting out at night steps down instead of descending a ladder in the dark. The cost of the low profile is headroom on the lower deck, which sits at floor level and works as a sitting-up space only for someone small. Measure the sitter, not the mattress.

How it lives in the room

Counter height changes who makes the bed

At 35.4 inches the upper mattress is within reach of someone standing on the floor. That sounds minor until you have wrestled a fitted sheet onto a deck at shoulder height. It also means the top bunk can go to a four-year-old sooner than a conventional bunk allows, provided the mattress stays within the stated 6 inches.

Padded treads, bare feet

The ladder treads and bed edges carry soft sponge padding. The point is grip as much as comfort: a bare foot on a padded tread does not skid the way it does on coated steel tube. Check the padding is seated along the full tread after assembly, because a loose section slides under weight and is worse than no padding at all.

A 37-inch bag wants rail length

The bedside storage bag runs 37.4 inches long and hangs on the guardrail. On the upper deck that covers most of the rail, which is the point, but it also means nothing else hangs there. Decide whether the bag or the hooks own that rail before both are fitted and one ends up behind the other.

Before you order

Recommended upper mattress thickness is no more than 6 inches. With a 12.2-inch guardrail that leaves just over 6 inches of rail standing above the sleeping surface. Fit a 10-inch mattress and the rail becomes a lip, which is the one specification on this bunk that cannot be stretched.
