Eighteen feet of length against ten of width is the proportion a working grower chooses. It gives two long benches with a central aisle, and every plant ends up within arm's reach of a path, which a square plan of similar area does not manage. The cost is in the ends: the far corner of an 18 foot house is a walk from the door, so the watering point and the tools belong in the middle rather than by the entrance.

How it lives in the room

Run the long wall east to west

A long house catches very different light depending on which way it points. Lining the 18 foot wall up with the sun's path spreads daylight evenly along both benches; running it north to south leaves one end in shade for half the day and the plants will tell you about it.

Two benches and a central aisle

Ten feet of width divides neatly into a bench, an aisle wide enough for a barrow, and a second bench. Set that out with string before the frame goes up, because the aisle width decides whether you work in here comfortably or shuffle sideways past trays.

Vent both ends of the run

Adjustable roof vents move air by convection, and in a long house the air has to travel. Open vents at both ends rather than only above the door, otherwise the far end sits still and humid while the entrance stays comfortable, and fungal trouble always starts in the stagnant corner.

Before you order

The frame is bedded in a trench and screwed down, so the site is effectively permanent and 180 square feet is a large commitment of garden. Check the ground drains before digging: a greenhouse in a wet corner holds that water inside all winter.
