The lift-top headboard is the same idea as on the smaller frames in this family, scaled up to a king, and the scale changes how it behaves. A padded lid spanning a king headboard is a long, heavy panel hinged along the back, and four pillows plus whatever decorative cushions survive sit on top of it. Opening it is a two-handed job done after clearing the bed, not something reached for at bedtime. That is fine when the compartment holds winter bedding and useless if a bedside drawer was the expectation.
