Colour is not only cosmetic on a tarp shelter. A gray cover passes less light than a white one, so the space underneath stays dimmer and cooler on a bright afternoon, which suits a vehicle or machinery better than it suits working under there without a lamp. It also shows dust and pollen less across 200 square feet of fabric. Everything structural is the same as the rest of the family: eight legs, reinforced top poles, mesh windows and ballast in the box.

How it lives in the room

Take a lamp under the gray cover

A darker tarp cuts the daylight reaching the inside, which is welcome for a car and unhelpful for anyone changing a wheel. A clip-on light on a top bar solves it for very little, and it is worth fitting at build time while the frame is still empty.

Zip the doors with the frame square

Measure both diagonals of the 10 by 20 footprint and get them equal before the walls go on. Zips are the part that tells you the frame is out of true: a rhomboid frame leaves a door that binds halfway and eventually tears away from the tarp.

Re-tension the ties each season

PE fabric relaxes with heat and sun, and bungee ball ties lose their stretch. Walk round once in spring and once in autumn pulling the cover back tight, because a loose tarp flaps, and flapping is what wears a hole at the eyelets long before the fabric itself gives out.

Before you order

A tarp roof on a 10 by 20 span is not built to carry snow, whatever the cover colour. Water collects in the middle of the span rather than running off the sides, so clear it after heavy rain and take the cover down before winter sets in.
