This is the loft without a desk, and what occupies the lower bay instead is a clothes rod. That makes it the version worth buying for a room with no wardrobe at all, which in a dorm or a converted box room is most of them. Hanging space gets measured in inches of rail, and a crowded rail holds roughly one shirt per inch. A twin-width run therefore takes a child's entire wardrobe, or an adult's work shirts, but not both at once. Work out what is going on it before giving up the desk.

How it lives in the room

Hang the coats at the ladder end

Whatever lives at the end of the rail nearest the ladder gets grabbed on the way out of the room. Put the coat and the bag there and the daily items at the far end, or the rail turns into a place where everything is behind everything else.

Triangles are why it stays still

Wobble in loft beds comes from the frame racking sideways, and the fix is triangulation: diagonal bars at the back, brackets on all four lower corners, two-inch bars down the sides. It works. What it cannot fix is an uneven floor, so level the feet first and the bracing has something square to hold.

A rail needs more depth than a shelf

Clothes on hangers stand about twenty inches deep front to back. The bay has to stay clear to its front edge for that, which rules out pushing a dresser or a toy box into the space underneath. Decide whether the rail or the floor area matters more, because you cannot have both.

Before you order

Full-length 16.5-inch guardrails run both sides of the sleeping platform, so the ladder is the only way on or off. For an adult using this as a bed that is worth knowing in advance: no sitting on the edge with feet down, and no rolling out to stand up.
