Leaving the fireplace out changes what the cabinet can do. An insert takes the centre bay, needs clearance at its vent and puts a heat source under whatever sits above it, which rules out stacking a receiver or a games console in the warmest part of the unit. Without one, the full 58 inch width is storage: two open shelves sized for media boxes and soundbars, and two concealed cabinets with three-position shelves. The ambience comes from three LED strips instead of flames.

How it lives in the room

Three cable holes, three device groups

The holes are drilled where the factory expected devices to sit, so plan around them rather than against them. One for the television and soundbar, one for whatever lives on the open shelves, one for the cabinet side. Running every cable through a single hole is what produces the bundle that stops the console sitting flat to the wall.

Light the shelves, not the screen

All three strips illuminate shelves and base rather than washing the wall behind the television, which is the right way round. Light placed behind a screen reflects off the panel during dark scenes. Keep the strips low and warm for evening use and save the colour settings for when the television is off.

Match the dark oak top to the floor

The two-tone scheme only works if the oak top and the floor are either clearly the same tone or clearly different. A near miss between two browns is the one combination that looks accidental. Stand the carton against the floor in daylight before assembly, because the white panels will read differently under a filament bulb.

Before you order

The name says 56 in and the description gives a 58 in tabletop. Two inches matters when a console is going into an alcove, so measure for the larger figure and check the stated width on the option before ordering.
