Going from 58 to 70 inches does not get a bigger fire. The insert stays at 23 inches, so on this cabinet the flame occupies about a third of the front instead of nearly half, and it reads as a lit panel within a long piece of furniture rather than as the centre of it. Proportion is the thing to decide here. On the narrower cabinet the insert is the focal point; on this one it is an element in a composition, which suits a room where the television is the main event. If the fireplace is meant to carry the wall on its own, a 36 inch insert in a 70 inch console is the better match.

Fill the extra twelve inches deliberately

Centre the screen over the arch
