A U-shaped desk has three working sides and exactly one way in, and that opening decides where the whole bed can go. Sitting inside it means being enclosed on three sides with the chair as the only exit, which is excellent for two monitors and poor in a room where the gap ends up facing a wall. Point the opening at the room, then check the chair rolls back far enough for somebody to stand up without hitting a bed leg behind them.

How it lives in the room

Point the desk opening at the room

Work out the entry side before a bolt goes in, because a U-desk built facing the wrong way has to be dismantled rather than turned. Allow the depth of a rolled-back office chair beyond the opening, which is more floor than people expect once the frame is standing.

The acrylic cabinet is for looking at

A panelled display case keeps figures and models visible and out of the dust, which is the point of it. Acrylic scratches far more easily than glass, so clean it with a microfibre cloth and nothing abrasive. One pass with a kitchen scourer permanently clouds the panel.

Thirteen slats under a full mattress

Slat spacing matters more with foam than with sprung mattresses, because foam sags into wide gaps and the dip becomes permanent within a year or two. Thirteen reinforced slats across a full is close spacing. Keep them evenly distributed after any time the mattress comes off, since slats shift when they are not loaded.

Before you order

The lighting here runs to six thousand colours rather than the sixty thousand quoted on the kids' frames, a difference nobody will ever see. What matters more is that it is driven from an app or a wired controller, so clip the controller somewhere a hand lands from the pillow.
