Colour changes what the lighting does on this cabinet. On the white version the glow through the back panel washes the whole interior and softens it; against black, the same strips stay a defined band of light with a dark field around them. The contrast is higher, the shelves read as floating edges, and the flame colours look more saturated than they do on a pale carcass. Pick on that basis rather than on which finish is easier to match to the floor.

How it lives in the room

Black back panel sharpens the glow

The LED strips are the same as on the white cabinet and look brighter here because nothing around them is reflecting. In a dark room that is close to a cinema effect; in a bright one the strips disappear during the day and the cabinet reads as plain black. Set the brightness for evening use and leave it there.

Dust settles visibly on black panels

Dark finishes show a fine layer of dust within a few days, and the backlighting picks out exactly the surfaces that have it. A dry microfibre pass across the top and the shelf edges takes a minute. Avoid damp cloths on the panel faces, which leave drying marks that are far more obvious than the dust was.

Hide the cables behind the centre shelf

The cable holes sit behind the centre shelf and the side cabinets, which is also where they are least visible against a black carcass. Feed and tie the cables before pushing the unit back, because on an open-shelved console with lighting there is no door to close over a cable run that went wrong.

Before you order

The product name still reads as the white version with the black option in brackets, which is how the range is listed rather than a mistake. Confirm the selected colour at checkout rather than trusting the title.
