The step from 47 to 51 inches sounds trivial and is not. Circumference grows by around thirteen inches, which at 24 inches per place setting is more than half a seat, and the usable centre of the table grows more than that — the middle of a round table is where the serving dishes go, and it expands with the square of the radius. Practically, 47 inches is a table for four that takes six; 51 is a table for six that takes four generously. Grey wood-grain MDF top on a reinforced steel pedestal with 25 mm legs.

How it lives in the room

Measure the walkway

Four inches on the table costs four inches off every walkway around it. In a galley kitchen or a narrow dining room that is exactly the margin that decides whether people can pass behind a seated diner.

Use the middle

The extra area is mostly in the centre. This is the size where a serving platter, a board and a jug can all live in the middle without pushing anyone’s plate to the edge.

Tuck stools under

The cross base leaves the perimeter clear, so backless stools disappear entirely between meals. In a small kitchen that is worth more than the seating count.

Before you order

At 51 inches the reach across the table is more than four feet. Passing dishes rather than reaching becomes the norm, which is worth knowing if you like everything within arm’s length.
