Dark fronts behave differently in a kitchen. A black 71-inch cabinet reads as a built-in piece of joinery rather than furniture, which is why it works beside dark appliances and against a white wall, and badly in a room that is already short of light. It also shows dust and fingerprints along the fluting, particularly at door-handle height. The LED strip over the counter stops being decoration here: against a black carcass the work surface genuinely needs it.

How it lives in the room

Black fronts need a light source

A dark cabinet absorbs whatever the room gives it, and the interior of a deep compartment goes black. Switch the built-in LED on and leave it on when the cabinet is in use rather than treating it as mood lighting, and site the unit where it is not shading a window.

Keep the cart for daily traffic

The rolling tiers are at the height you reach without bending far, so they take whatever gets used every day. Fill them with bottles and packets, not with the slow cooker: heavy appliances on a pull-out make it drag, and a cart that drags stops being pulled out at all.

Wipe the fluting, not the panel

Vertical grooves on a dark finish collect dust in lines that catch the light. A dry microfibre cloth drawn down the flutes takes it out in one pass; wiping across the grooves pushes it in deeper and leaves the streaks that make a black cabinet look dirty two days after cleaning.

Before you order

Four drawers and a pull-out cart all occupy the lower half, so the cabinet wants clear floor in front of it rather than a stool or a bin. In a tight kitchen the open positions of cart and drawers overlap with the dishwasher door.
