Ninety-nine degrees is one degree past vertical, which sounds like nothing and is in fact the whole design. A dining chair that reclines properly pushes the sitter out of reach of the table; a chair at exactly ninety puts the full weight of the upper body onto the base of the spine. One degree of lean unloads the lower back without moving the shoulders away from a plate. Each chair measures 16.2 by 18.5 by 34 inches and carries 250 lb.

How it lives in the room

Ninety-nine degrees is barely a recline

The angle is small enough that it changes comfort rather than posture. Over a forty-minute meal it is the reason people stop shifting in the seat; over a two-hour evening it is the reason the chair gets chosen over a bench. It also means these are dining chairs and not lounge chairs, which is the correct trade.

Allow 18.5 inches of chair depth

Depth, not width, is what decides whether four of these fit a round table. Each chair is 18.5 inches front to back, so two opposite chairs plus the top is the measurement that has to clear the walls. Pushed in, they take less, but nobody lives with chairs permanently tucked.

Wipe the 4 cm cushion weekly

Forty millimetres of foam under PU is enough padding to trap crumbs in the seam where the cover meets the frame. A damp cloth round the perimeter once a week does more for how these age than anything applied to the surface. Leather conditioner is the wrong product on PU and leaves it tacky.

Before you order

The seat is an MDF base with foam and PU over it, so the weakness is not the metal frame. Standing on the seat to reach a cupboard concentrates load on a board, and that is what cracks rather than the 250 lb tube underneath.
