Read the can sizes before anything else. Two bins fit only front to back, and each one has to be no more than 15 by 11.8 by 23.6 inches; a single bin can be wider, up to 23.4 by 15 by 23.6. Most kitchen cans sold as 13 gallon are round or flare at the rim, and a round bin wastes the corners of that opening. The cabinet is the easy part of this purchase, the bins are the part people get wrong.

How it lives in the room

Take the tape to your bins

Measure the bin you own at its widest point, usually the rim, not the base. If it is over 11.8 inches across there, the pair will not sit nose to tail and you are buying a one-bin cabinet with a lot of spare room beside it. Rectangular bins are the ones that use this space properly.

Rails instead of a tilt-out

A pull-out on rails carries weight the way a tilt-out front cannot, because the load stays vertical and the hinge is not holding a full bag at an angle. It also means the drawer needs clear floor in front of it: a kitchen island stool parked there blocks the whole mechanism.

Second life as a hamper

The lower bay takes laundry baskets, dog food or cat food just as readily as bins, which is why this ends up in utility rooms and bathrooms. The raised edge on the counter is there to stop a bottle rolling off, so the top earns a job too.

Before you order

No trash cans come with it, and the enclosed design that blocks odour also blocks airflow, so a bag left over a warm weekend is worse in here than in an open bin. The drawer above is shallow and sized for cutlery rather than crockery.
