The useful number is 29.3 inches of interior height. Weight limits sell crates, but height is what a dog notices, and a Labrador or a boxer needs to stand without the ears brushing the roof. Measure your dog at the shoulder and add a few inches for the head carriage; if that figure is close to 29, the dog will live in here lying down rather than turning around in it. Interior width of 22.4 inches is the other limit worth knowing.

How it lives in the room

Steel tube at 0.4 inch thick

The frame, not the timber, is what resists a dog that chews and scratches at the door line. Check the tube joints are pulled fully home during assembly: a frame left a turn loose on one corner is where the rattle comes from, and the rattle is what teaches a dog to push at it.

A sliding door needs no arc

The door hides and slides rather than swinging, which is the difference between a crate that fits beside a sofa and one that needs three feet of clear floor in front. In a narrow living room this is the whole reason to choose this shape over a wire cage.

Treat the top as furniture

A hundred and fifty pounds on the lid covers a television, a lamp and a stack of books, so the crate earns its floor space as a console. Put the heavy item over a corner post rather than mid-span, and keep a clear strip at the front so the door panel still folds down.

Before you order

Interior width of 22.4 inches is snug for a broad-chested 80 lb dog that likes to sleep fully stretched on its side. A bed cut close to 40 by 22 inches lies flat; anything larger bunches and gets pushed into a heap.
