Fifteen inches of interior width is the figure that matters, and it is narrower than the outside measurement suggests. A fifty-pound dog fits comfortably curled or lying along the length; the same dog sprawled flat on its side will touch both walls. That is not automatically wrong, since a den works by being snug, but it does mean a broad-chested breed near the weight limit is better served by the 42-inch model than by this one.

How it lives in the room

Fifteen inches sets the breed

Measure the dog lying down as well as standing. Length is generous here at 34 inches, width is not, and the shape suits a lean medium dog better than a stocky one. A spaniel or a border collie settles in this footprint; a bulldog of the same weight does not.

End table beside the sofa

At 30 inches tall and 22 deep this lands at side-table height, and the 120 lb top takes a lamp, a tray and a stack of books. That is the practical reason to buy furniture-style over wire: the floor space is doing two jobs instead of one.

Pads keep the evening quiet

The sliding panel closes on built-in pads, which is what keeps a crate in a living room from punctuating a film. Check both pads are seated when the door is assembled, and the dog can come and go through the evening without anyone looking up.

Before you order

Interior height is 26 inches, and weight alone is a poor guide with leggy breeds. A dog that stands taller than that at the shoulder will have to duck to get in, which is enough to stop it using the crate at all.
