A full over full is 15 inches wider than the twin version of the same bunk, 54 inches of mattress against 39. In a shared bedroom that width is taken out of the walkway, not out of thin air. What it buys is two decks that are real double beds: a teenager fits, a parent reading a bedtime story fits, two cousins staying over fit on one deck. Measure the walkway that is left before deciding the extra width is free.

How it lives in the room

Fifteen inches wider than a twin bunk

Chalk 54 inches plus the frame on the floor and walk past it. Twenty-four inches is a comfortable walkway beside a bed and 36 is generous; below 20 inches two children cannot pass each other in a shared room. The width is the whole decision with a full-over-full, and it is easier to judge on the floor than on a page.

Six inches of mattress on a full deck

The stated ceiling for the top deck is 6 inches, and 6-inch full mattresses are a narrower field than 6-inch twins. Find the mattress before the bunk arrives rather than after, because the guardrail height is set around that figure and a standard 10-inch full mattress leaves almost no rail standing above the sleeper.

Two full decks, one anti-tip bracket

The anti-tip device fixes the frame to the wall and on a full-over-full there is more mass above the floor than on a twin bunk. Fit it before the mattresses go on, into something solid rather than into wallboard alone, and check it again after the first month of climbing. It is the one part of the build with no second chance.

Before you order

The drawers sit at the base of the frame and carry the same locking catch as the twin version. On a full-over-full the frame is wider, so the drawers are longer: measure the pull-out distance into the walkway you already decided was tight.
