The pot is the difference on this one. Rather than the small seven-inch cube used on the areca pairs, this stands in a tall white planter measuring 15.8 inches high by 8.7 inches square, which is enough height to give the base visual weight and enough mass to stop it tipping. The fronds are polyester over metal wiring so branch positions hold, they are fade-resistant and wipe clean, and green moss on the pot surface hides the fill.

How it lives in the room

Use the pot height

A 15.8-inch planter lifts the foliage clear of a sofa arm or a radiator shelf, which is exactly why a tall pot exists. Where the tall pot goes decides the tree, not the other way round.

Position the fronds outward

Bend the wired branches out and slightly down, then rotate individual fronds so they face different directions. A palm with every frond in the same plane looks pressed.

Wipe rather than dust

Polyester fronds take a damp cloth better than a feather duster — the cloth lifts dust instead of moving it. Support each frond from below as you go.

Before you order

The tall white planter is a strong visual element in its own right. In a room with a lot of white it disappears; against a dark wall it is very much part of the composition.
