Monstera deliciosa is recognised entirely by its leaf — large, glossy, and cut through with the holes botanists call fenestrations. This version uses waterproof fabric leaves on plastic-and-wire stems, so each leaf can be turned and each stem set upright, and it ships as two sets of plants that you assemble together into one full-looking plant rather than a sparse single stem. Four feet tall, in a white planter, needing nothing but the occasional dusting.

How it lives in the room

Build it as one plant

The two sets are meant to be combined, not separated. Interleave the stems so the leaves alternate in height rather than putting one set in front of the other — that is what fills the middle.

Show the fenestrations

The splits in the leaves are the whole reason the species is recognisable, and they only read when light passes through them. Turn each leaf until the cuts are visible from where you stand, not edge-on.

Set the stems upright

Monstera stems rise before the leaf tips over. Bend each wire stem up out of the pot and let only the leaf itself hang — stems curving out from the base is how a monstera ends up looking like a fern.

Before you order

Assembly here is a genuine job rather than a formality — allow half an hour with the instructions. The result depends almost entirely on how the stems are staged, so it is worth the time.
