How it lives in the room

Give the drainage somewhere to go

Holes in the backing only help if there is a fall underneath. On a flat balcony, put the mat where water can reach a drain, or lift and dry it after heavy use — otherwise the drainage layer just holds it against the tile.

Wash on a schedule

For pet use, a rinse every few days and a soapy wash weekly keeps it fresh. Doing it before there is a reason to is much easier than doing it after.

Restore the pile

Flattened fibres come back by brushing against the lay, or by leaving the mat in sun for about three days. That is the whole recovery procedure and it works better than most people expect.

It cuts easily with a sharp knife from the back. Cut long and trim rather than measuring exactly — a mat cut half an inch short cannot be fixed.
