How it lives in the room

Be realistic about six

At 59 inches, six people eat elbow to elbow. For everyday four it is roomy and the extra pair of chairs waits at the side; if six is your normal number, the 67-inch table is the better call.

Glass and wind

A tempered top is heavy and safe, and it is still glass. Never leave an umbrella up and unattended in a table with a glass top — the pole catching a gust is the single most common way these break.

Keeping it clear

Glass shows every ring and every fingerprint, which is why it is so satisfying to clean. Plain water and a squeegee or microfibre beats any spray — sprays leave the film that shows up at sunset.

Tempered glass does not crack, it granulates — when it fails it goes all at once into blunt pieces. That is safer than a sharp shard, but it means a chipped edge should be dealt with rather than watched.
