The measurement that decides whether a loft bed works is not in the product listing, it is on your ceiling. Add the height of the sleeping platform, the thickness of the mattress and the sitting height of the person using it — roughly 34 to 36 inches for an adult, 28 to 32 for a child. If that sum lands within a few inches of your ceiling, the top bunk becomes a place to lie down and nothing else. Ceilings under eight feet make a loft cramped; under seven and a half, uncomfortable.

How it lives in the room

Do the ceiling sum first

Platform plus mattress plus sitting height. Then measure the room. This is the one calculation that cannot be fixed after delivery, and the one most often skipped.

Light the desk separately

A desk under a loft sits in its own shadow — the platform above blocks the ceiling fixture entirely. A clamp lamp on the frame is not optional; plan the outlet for it before the bed goes in the corner.

Fabric drawers want a routine

Three soft drawers hold a lot and hide everything, which is why they end up as the place things go to be forgotten. Label them or empty them monthly.

Before you order

The desk is L-shaped, which means the loft has a long side and a short side and only fits one way round in a corner. Work out which corner before assembly — reversing the desk means taking the frame apart, not just turning it.
