Sling chairs are the underrated answer to rain. Textilene is a woven, coated mesh — water goes through it rather than into it, so twenty minutes after a shower the chairs are dry and nobody is carrying cushions in and out. Here six of them come with a 67 by 31.5-inch table whose top is faux wood plastic with a realistic grain, carried on a galvanised metal frame chosen for rust rather than for looks. The chairs have high backs and curved armrests, they are light enough to move one-handed, and they have non-slip feet so they do not skate on a smooth deck.

How it lives in the room

This is the set for a climate with unpredictable afternoons. No cushions to rescue means the table gets used on days when a cushioned set would have stayed covered.

Watch the sling tension

A sling seat should be taut with a slight give, not slack. Over several seasons the fabric relaxes; catching that early and re-tensioning at the rail is easy, whereas a sling left to sag pulls unevenly at its seams.

Cleaning

Warm water and a soft brush across the weave, then rinse through from the back. Anything abrasive frays the coating on the fibres, and once that goes the fabric ages quickly.

Before you order

Sling chairs breathe, which is wonderful in July and noticeable in October. If your dining season runs late, a thin pad on each seat extends it considerably.
