This is the smallest of the ficus family and the easiest to place: five feet tall in a seven-inch planter, which is a footprint small enough for a hallway, a bedroom corner or the gap beside a desk. The trunks are intricately twisted rather than straight, the leaves are silk with real colour variation, and the pot is topped with dried moss over a cement fill so it stands firm. Internal wires run through the branches, so the fullness is yours to set.

How it lives in the room

Use the small footprint

A seven-inch pot goes places a big planter cannot — beside a radiator, between a door and a bookcase, on a landing. Measure the narrow spot; this is the tree that fits it.

Fill out the middle

Ficus foliage is dense. Rather than spreading branches wide, work them into the space between the trunks so light does not pass straight through the middle — the opposite instruction to an olive tree.

Dusting

Small leaves in quantity are best cleaned with air rather than cloth. A hairdryer on cool, or a burst of compressed air, does in thirty seconds what wiping does in twenty minutes.
