A bookcase standing between two beds gives each child a visual boundary and nothing else. It blocks the sight of a sibling reading with a lamp on, which is most of the nightly argument, but it does not block sound and it does not stop that lamp lighting the ceiling. Expect it to fix the first problem and neither of the other two. The real advantage is that it separates into two sections, so when the beds eventually part each child keeps half the storage instead of one of them keeping all of it.

How it lives in the room

Split the bookcase when the beds split

The day the two beds go into separate rooms, the divider halves and goes with them. Keep the fixings in a labelled bag taped under one bed from assembly day, because the small parts for a four-year-old piece of furniture are never where anyone thought they were.

Black panels wipe, velvet does not

The MDF surfaces take a damp cloth and a scrubbing. The upholstered headboards take a foam cleaner and a brush. Children do not distinguish between the two surfaces, so expect the headboard to need the slower treatment two or three times a year and keep the right product in the house.

Two-tier shelves live at the foot

Open shelving near the foot of each bed holds books, shoes and soft toys at a height a child can reach. It also sticks out into the route past the bed, so the floor in front of it has to stay clear. Shoes on the shelf, not under it.

Before you order

One lighting system and one charging panel serve both beds, so both children are always on the same colour at the same time. Music-reactive mode in a shared bedroom is a negotiation rather than a feature, and the controller should live with an adult.
