Thirty-one and a half inches tall is the figure that makes this work, because it puts every bin and shelf within reach of a child who is standing on the floor rather than climbing. The corollary is that none of this storage is out of reach either, so anything that needs to stay away from a toddler cannot live here. At 13.4 inches deep it takes less floor than a toy chest and spreads the same volume along a wall instead.

How it lives in the room

Twelve bins, twelve categories

Four large and eight small is a sorting system whether or not anyone intends it to be. Blocks, cars and figures in the large ones, small sets in the small ones, and one bin left empty for whatever the week produces. Labels with pictures work before reading does and save the sorting argument.

Books face forward on the tiers

The three shelves are the part that gets used at bedtime, so keep them to books with the covers showing rather than spines. A child picks a book by its picture; a shelf packed spine-out gets ignored and quietly turns into another place to put toys.

Pine edges want a check

Solid pine with rounded corners takes knocks from a scooter without splitting, and a bump that dents it shows as a bruise rather than a chip. Run a hand over the edges after assembly and sand any roughness at the shelf ends, which is where small hands go most often.

Before you order

Open-front bins mean the contents are always visible, which is what makes tidying quick and also means the wall never looks tidy. The bins lift out entirely, so expect them to travel around the house and plan on returning them.
