Nine inches of extra diameter over the 42-inch model sounds incremental and is not. Rim length grows from roughly 132 inches to about 160, which is a full extra place setting, and the usable centre grows faster than that because area scales with the square of the radius. The practical consequence is a different kind of meal: at 42 inches the serving dishes compete with the plates, at 51 they sit in the middle and stay there. Same grey wood grain, same 25 mm legs, same shelf underneath.

How it lives in the room

Nine inches costs nine inches of floor

Every inch added to a round top comes off the walkway on all sides at once. Going from 42 to 51 inches takes four and a half inches from the gap behind each chair. In a dining room under eleven feet across, that is often exactly the margin that decides whether someone can pass behind a seated guest.

Serve from the middle of the circle

This is the diameter where a platter, a board and a jug can live in the centre without pushing anyone plate to the rim. Set it up that way deliberately on the first few meals, because a round table used with everything passed hand to hand never shows the advantage you paid nine inches of floor for.

Reach across is over four feet

At 51 inches the far edge is more than four feet away, which is beyond comfortable reach from a seated position. Condiments and water go in the centre, not at one end, and anything there is only one of gets passed. Households used to a small table find this the real adjustment, not the footprint.

Before you order

The shelf under a 51-inch top is the same part as on the smaller models, so it is proportionally less storage than the tabletop suggests. Treat it as a tray for mats and tableware rather than as a sideboard with a plate stack.
