The only real decision between this and the rustic version is the tone of the room it stands in. At 33.6 inches to the top, the crate is taller than a sofa arm and about the height of a kitchen counter run, so the finish is at eye level whenever anyone is sitting down. Pale oak disappears against light floors and white walls; it also shows claw marks at the door edge sooner than a darker, distressed surface does.

How it lives in the room

Oak beside a pale sofa

Light finishes work in rooms with light floors, and fight with mid-brown furniture. Stand in the doorway and look at what the crate will sit next to rather than at the wall behind it, because at this height the piece is seen against the sofa arm, not the paintwork.

Quiet pads earn their name

The pads on the sliding panel take the knock out of the door closing, which matters when a dog lets itself in and out through the evening. Check they are seated during assembly; a pad left out of its recess turns a quiet door into the loudest object in the room.

Latch drill before you leave

The safety latch is reinforced against accidental opening, and the only way to trust it is to test it with the dog inside while you are still in the house. Two or three short absences teach the dog the crate holds, and teach you whether the latch is seated properly.

Before you order

Wipe-clean surfaces handle muddy paws, but a light wood tone will mark where a wet dog leans against the inside of the door panel repeatedly. A washable mat at the threshold is the difference between a crate that still looks like furniture after a winter and one that does not.
