A 2.8 inch backrest that curves inward is comfortable and it is also furniture that occupies space behind the seat. Most people measure a chair by its seat and are then surprised that it will not push fully under a table with a deep apron, because the thickest part of the back is at the top where the apron is. Measure from the front edge of the seat to the outermost point of the curve before assuming four of these disappear under the table between meals.

How it lives in the room

Count the curved back into the depth

The wrap is the selling point and the thing that eats clearance. On a table with a plain top and open underside it is a non-issue; on one with a rail or a drawer it decides how far the chair goes in. Hold a tape against the back at shoulder height, not at the seat, to get the real number.

Spring and webbing, not foam alone

The seat sits on a webbed and sprung foundation rather than directly on a board, which is why the cushion keeps its shape over years instead of flattening into the outline of whoever uses it most. It also gives the seat a little travel, so it feels softer than its 4.5 inches of foam would suggest.

Woven fabric breathes and absorbs

Open weave is the reason these stay comfortable through a long summer meal where leather-look seats do not. The same openness means spills soak in rather than sitting on the surface. Treat the fabric before the first meal and keep a cloth within reach; that is the whole trade with woven upholstery.

Before you order

A sprung seat settles in the first few months and sits slightly lower than it did new. That is the webbing taking its working tension, not sag, and it stops once the foundation has found its shape.
