Round tables have an arithmetic that rectangular ones do not. Circumference is what seats people, and at 47 inches across you have about 148 inches of edge — six places at a comfortable 24 inches each, four if you want elbow room. Extend to 63 inches and the edge grows to roughly 198 inches, which is eight places without anyone apologising. That is the whole proposition here, on a thickened 36 mm MDF top over a pedestal base, with a two-tier shelf tucked under the table for the things that otherwise live on it.

How it lives in the room

Check the room at the big size

The dimension that matters is 63 inches plus three feet of chair clearance on every side — call it eleven feet across the room. If that works only by moving other furniture, you will end up never extending it.

Practise the extension once

Open and close it on the first day while the mechanism is clean and you have time. Learning how the clamps release with eight people waiting is a bad moment to discover the sequence.

Everyday size

Most households live at 47 inches and extend three or four times a year. Set the room up so the small size looks deliberate rather than like a table waiting to be opened.

Before you order

A 36 mm MDF top is heavy. Two people for the flip during assembly, and two people any time it moves — dragging a pedestal table across a floor by the top puts the load in exactly the wrong place.
