How it lives in the room

Measure the alcove three times

At the floor, at waist height and at the top. Plastered walls bow, and the narrowest of the three measurements is the only one that matters.

Mind the skirting board

A skirting board pushes the cabinet forward by its own thickness. If the alcove is tight, the board may need a notch cut in the plinth or the piece will sit proud.

Load the bottom two heavy

Twenty inches wide and nearly four feet tall is the least forgiving proportion in the range. Weight at the base is doing structural work, not just organisational.

A narrow tall cabinet is the one shape where opening two drawers at once genuinely matters. Close each before opening the next and fit the wall anchor without exception.
