The choice here is horizontal. A wide chest spends floor space that a tall one keeps, and gets three things back for it: a long top that holds a lamp and a tray and a leaning mirror at the same time, drawers wide enough to lay a folded shirt across rather than along, and a low centre of gravity that makes the cabinet hard to tip. The cost is wall. A wide chest needs an uninterrupted run of it, which rules out the alcoves and door-to-corner gaps where a tower fits.

How it lives in the room

Find the uninterrupted run of wall

Measure the longest stretch of wall with no radiator, no socket that has to stay reachable and no door arc crossing it. A wide chest wants all of that in one piece. Rooms usually have exactly one such wall, and it is often the one the bed is already on, which is the decision to make first.

Lay shirts across, not along

Wide drawers invite long rows and long rows waste them. Folded garments laid across the width, stood on edge in two or three ranks, use the full span and stay visible from the front. Stacked flat in one pile, the bottom of a wide drawer becomes the least accessible storage in the room.

A curved front over a long body

Curves do more work on a wide cabinet than on a narrow one, because a long flat front is the shape that reads as a slab. The profile breaks that span with a shadow line that moves as the light does, which is why the piece looks lighter than its footprint suggests.

Before you order

A curved profile on a wide cabinet means the ends are the shallowest part of the top, so a frame or a bookend standing near a corner has less flat surface under it than one in the middle. Anything that has to stand upright belongs centred.
