Nobody plans for the fact that a top bunk has no bedside table and never can have one. Everything the sleeper wants at night either hangs off the frame or gets carried down a ladder: glasses, water, a book, a phone. This bunk includes a fabric bedside pouch and four hooks for exactly that, and those two plain-looking parts decide whether the upper bed is livable or merely sleepable. Hang the pouch inside the guardrail at pillow height during assembly, and the midnight climb down stops being part of the routine.

How it lives in the room

Hang the pouch at pillow height

Not at the foot, not on the outside of the rail. Have the child lie down and reach, then fix it where the hand lands. A pouch mounted for the convenience of the person assembling the bed gets ignored, and the water glass ends up balanced on the rail instead.

A top opening beats a side climb

The ladder enters through an opening in the guardrail rather than over it. That means nobody swings a leg across a rail in the dark, which is where most bunk falls begin. It also means the ladder position is not negotiable afterwards: the opening is where the opening is.

Count the bedding, not the beds

Separated into two twins this becomes two beds needing two sets of sheets and, ideally, two mattresses of matching depth. Households that split a bunk and then shuffle one duvet between rooms discover the cost is linen rather than furniture. Buy the second set when you buy the bunk.

Before you order

The anti-tip kit is a wall fixing, so the bunk is only as stable as whatever it is screwed into. On plasterboard that means locating a stud or using a cavity anchor rated for the load, not the plug supplied in the hardware bag.
