Harder than HDPE is the claim that carries this top, and hardness runs both ways. A stiffer moulding holds its plane through a damp winter instead of sagging between the legs, and it resists the scuffing that leaves a soft plastic table looking tired after two summers. What hardness does not give you is give. A dropped cast-iron pan, or a planter dragged across the surface, leaves a mark where a softer sheet would dent and spring back, and a moulded grain cannot be sanded flat afterwards.

How it lives in the room

Why 29.5 in fixes the chair height

At 29.5 in this is standard dining height, which means the chairs that work with it have a seat about 17 to 18 in off the ground and leave roughly a foot of thigh clearance. Low lounge chairs and folding camp chairs put the sitter chin-level with the top. That is why a borrowed chair so often feels wrong at an outdoor table which is dimensionally correct.

A 400 lb top is not a platform

The 400 lb figure describes load spread over the surface, not a point load in one spot. Four people leaning on the edge sits well inside it; standing on the table to hang a string of lights across the yard does not, because a heel concentrates the whole weight onto a few sq in of moulding. Use a step ladder and keep the top for food and elbows.

Grain that will not grey like cedar

The wood tone is moulded in, so it needs no sealing and no repainting, and it will not silver with age the way timber does. That is the appeal and also the catch: set beside cedar decking or a teak bench, the table stays exactly the colour it arrived in while the wood around it drifts grey. The mismatch grows over seasons rather than settling.

Before you order

Pre-drilled holes in a moulded top accept a bolt once or twice before the thread boss loses its bite. Hand-tighten with the supplied tools, skip the impact driver, and resist the urge to take the table apart and rebuild it in a different corner of the patio.
