A 71 by 32 in top is close to sixteen sq ft of flat surface, and in deep blue that is the most visible object on most patios. Colour on a table behaves differently from colour on a chair: nobody looks at the seat of a chair, and everybody looks at a table. A saturated blue holds its own against grey pavers and green planting, and it also records everything, pollen in spring, dried droplets after a rinse, a dusty handprint along the edge. A wood tone hides all three.

How it lives in the room

Dry the blue top, do not air it

Hard water dries to a pale film that is invisible on wood grain and obvious on a dark top. Rinse with plain water and take a microfibre cloth across the surface while it is still wet; two minutes of drying saves the spotted look that sends people reaching for a spray cleaner they do not need. Sixteen sq ft takes one pass with a dry cloth.

Keep deep blue out of afternoon sun

Dark plastic takes on more heat in direct sun than a pale wood tone does. HIPS holds its shape in heat, so this is a comfort question rather than a structural one: forearms on a hot top are unpleasant, butter and chocolate do not survive the wait, and plates set out early arrive warm. Siting the table where the umbrella or the house shades it by mid-afternoon answers all of it.

Six seats, one pole in the middle

The hole sits in the centre of a 71 in run, so canopy span decides who gets shade. A small six FT umbrella covers the middle four seats and leaves the two end chairs in full sun; nine FT of canopy reaches the ends. Work out which seats matter at two in the afternoon before buying the umbrella, because the hole position is fixed.

Before you order

HIPS asks for no winter storage, which means this table will sit outdoors through frost and thaw. On an exposed site the open canopy is the sail, not the top: take the umbrella down ahead of a storm rather than trusting a weighted base to hold it.
