Forty-eight square feet is the starter size, and the constraint is not area but turning room. One person with a watering can works comfortably inside; two people and a barrow do not. What that buys is a greenhouse that fits beside a shed or against a boundary in a small garden, and a build the kit expects two people to complete in an afternoon rather than a weekend. The wood frame is the other difference from the steel houses: warmer in look, and a surface that takes a screw anywhere you want a hook.

How it lives in the room

Two people for the panel work

The kit states two installers, and the reason is the glazing rather than the weight. Polycarbonate sheets flex and catch wind while they are being guided into a channel, and one person holding a sheet cannot also drive the fixing. Pick a still morning and the build goes without drama.

Screw the hooks into the timber

A wood frame takes fixings anywhere, which a steel one does not. Hang a thermometer, a hose reel and a shelf of small pots directly off the uprights, and a 6 by 8 footprint stops feeling tight because the walls are carrying what the floor cannot.

One vent, watched closely

A small house heats and cools faster than a large one, and there is a single roof vent to manage it. On a bright spring day open it in the morning and leave it open; a 48 square foot space can swing far enough by noon to scorch seedlings that were fine at breakfast.

Before you order

Internal side supports add the wind resistance, so they go in as specified rather than being left out to free up headroom. Timber frames need a coat of preservative at the base where the frame meets wet ground, which is where rot starts.
