A dining table surface has three enemies, and this top is specified against all of them: heat, scratches and water. What that means in practice is a laminated MDF panel with a hard-wearing wood-grain finish that will shrug off a warm plate, a dragged bowl and a spilled glass, provided none of them are extreme or left standing. Forty-seven inches on a cross-shaped carbon steel base with 25 mm legs, sized for four with a fifth possible.

How it lives in the room

Set the house rules early

Trivets under hot pans, coasters under cold glasses, no cutting directly on the top. Three habits established in week one save the surface for a decade; introduced in year two they never take.

Clean with less

A damp cloth and a dry one is the whole regime. Abrasive creams dull the texture and silicone polishes build a film that shows every fingerprint afterwards.

Deal with edges first

On a laminated top, damage starts at the perimeter where the banding is. Check the edges when you wipe, and if a corner ever lifts, glue it back the same week.

Before you order

Scratch-resistant is not scratch-proof. A ceramic plate dragged with grit under it will mark any laminate, and that mark cannot be sanded out the way it could on solid timber.
