An armchair sets its own pitch. The arms decide where the next chair can start, so ten armchairs along a table edge is a fixed number at a fixed spacing. Ten armless chairs do not work that way: the limit is shoulders, which means five down one side becomes six at a pinch for a holiday meal, or four spread generously on an ordinary evening. Across two tables that flexibility is most of the point of the set. What you give up is the elbow rest and anywhere to hang a jacket.

How it lives in the room

Shoulders decide the pitch, not arms

Allow about twenty in of table edge per adult as a working figure, and measure the run before committing to ten in a single line. Armless chairs let that flex in both directions, which is useful with mixed ages: children take less edge than adults, so a family of twelve often fits where ten adults would be tight. None of the spacing is fixed by hardware.

One table for food, one for people

Most gatherings of ten do not sit down for the whole evening. Putting the second table against a wall as the serving surface and seating six or seven at the first is the configuration that actually gets used, and it keeps platters off the eating table. The pair pushed together is for the two or three meals a year when everybody sits at once.

Ten chairs vanish under two tops

All ten chairs tuck fully under the two tables, so the off-season footprint of a twelve-piece set is the footprint of the tables themselves. HIPS stays outdoors through frost and damp, which means there is no storage decision to defer: push the chairs in, plug the umbrella holes, and the terrace is clear until spring.

Before you order

The listing gives the piece count but no table dimensions, so the joined length stays unknown until the cartons open. Mark out two tables plus a walking lane with tape first, and plan on two people and an afternoon to build twelve pieces properly.
