The most valuable thing about this bunk is not that it stacks. It is that it stops stacking. Bunk beds have a natural life of about five years in most households — the age gap that made sharing sensible becomes the age gap that makes it impossible — and a bunk that cannot be dismantled into two usable beds becomes a large object nobody wants. This one comes apart into two ordinary twin frames with the same footprint each. That is the purchase.

How it lives in the room

Assemble it loose, then tighten

The instructions say not to torque any screw until every part is in place, and on a metal bunk that is not boilerplate. Steel tubing needs a little play to line up the last holes. Tighten early and you will be forcing a bolt through a hole that no longer meets its partner.

Choose the ladder side on the day

The ladder mounts left or right. Pick the side that keeps the climb away from the door swing and away from the wall the light switch is on, so nobody is groping past a ladder in the dark.

Plan the separation now

When the day comes to split it, the two frames need about eighty inches of wall each. If that is not going to exist in the room, know it now rather than in five years.

Before you order

The 11.2 inches under the lower bunk is the most generous storage in the bunk range and it will fill with toys. Use drawers on wheels rather than open bins — anything left loose under a bunk becomes something a child stands on to reach the upper bed.
