If the drawers are already fitted and loaded, you are wrestling that weight over a frame with things sticking out of it. Build the frame, fit the drawers empty, unbox and expand the mattress on the slats, then load the drawers. Ten minutes of sequencing saves a strained back and a torn drawer front.

How it lives in the room

Sequence the build

Frame, empty drawers, mattress, then contents. Doing it in any other order means lifting weight around obstacles.

Let the mattress expand on the slats

Foam in a box needs 24 to 72 hours to reach full height, and it should do that on the surface it will live on. Expanding it on the floor and lifting it later is the hardest possible way to do this.

Check square before loading

With the mattress on but the drawers empty, measure the frame corner to corner. Equal diagonals mean square. Correct it now, because a loaded bed does not get adjusted.

Before you order

The reinforced slat system is the part doing the real work under a full-size foam mattress. Slats are the component that fails first on cheap frames — if one ever cracks, replace it immediately rather than sleeping around it, because the neighbours then carry the load and follow.
