Six feet is the height that reads as “tree” in a normal room. Below that you have a large plant; above it you start negotiating with the ceiling. This one comes finished — natural trunk, silk foliage, small olives among the leaves, and a heavy ceramic pot already filled with cement so nothing has to be bought separately and nothing tips when a dog goes past at speed. It wants no water, no light and no pruning, which is the entire argument for a faux olive over the real thing in a room that faces north.

How it lives in the room

Open the branches out

Everything ships compressed against the trunk. Work from the bottom up, pulling each branch out and slightly down — real olive branches droop, they do not point at the ceiling, and that one adjustment does more for realism than anything else.

Find the light

Faux foliage looks its best with light coming across it rather than straight at it. Two or three feet off a window, at an angle, is where silk leaves stop looking flat.

Keep it clean

Dust settles on the upper surface of every leaf and that is what gives an artificial tree away from across a room. A feather duster once a month, or a hairdryer on cool from a distance, is the whole routine.

Ceramic and cement together make this heavy — that is the point, and it is also a two-person job to move once assembled. Decide where it lives before you fill the pot into position.
