Twenty feet is the dimension that changes the job. At 140 square feet this arrives as a single roll that two people move and one person cannot, and once it is unrolled there is no repositioning it by lifting a corner. Everything therefore happens before the turf comes out of the wrapper: the ground gets levelled and compacted first, the run direction gets decided from wherever the garden is viewed, and the cuts get marked on the backing. A 20 FT sheet telegraphs every hollow underneath it.

How it lives in the room

Unroll twenty feet in one pass

Carry the roll to the far end of the area, line up the leading edge against the straightest boundary, and walk it backwards in a single pass. Dragging a sheet this size sideways to correct a misaligned start stretches the backing unevenly, and stretched backing never lies flat again. Ten minutes checking the start line saves the whole piece.

Keep it clear of glass and steel

Reflected sunlight is a genuine failure mode for synthetic fibre. Low-emissivity windows, mirrored balustrades, stainless rails and glass tables concentrate enough heat to melt a patch of pile, and the damage is permanent. Walk the area at midday in summer and look for bright spots on the ground before committing 140 square feet to that position.

Offcuts become the dog patch

A 7 by 20 sheet rarely fits an awkward garden exactly, and what gets trimmed off is usable turf with the same backing. A strip two feet wide makes a balcony pad, a square under a water bowl, or a mat at a back door. Cut from the back with a sharp blade and keep the pieces rather than binning them with the wrapper.

Before you order

Sustained high surface temperature is also on the avoid list, which rules out the strip directly against a south-facing dark wall. Fixings and infill are a separate matter, and 140 square feet needs a meaningful quantity of both.
